We interrupt our regularly scheduled blog post to wish you a Happy National Gorilla Suit Day! Controversy follows this day every year as there are those who celebrate the day with joy and cheer, whereas others believe it’s a made-up holiday invented by gorilla suit manufacturers in order to sell the suits– I think you know which side we’re on.
National Gorilla Suit Day was invented by the late MAD! Magazine cartoonist, Don Martin. The holiday is primarily featured in his 1963 paperback “Don Martin Bounces Back.” The story follows a Mr. Bestertester who is vehemently opposed to the holiday. As a result, chaos and carnage ensue his life. The story features humans in gorilla suits, gorillas in human suits, gorillas in gorilla suits, as well both human and gorillas in various other disguises. The moral of the story? Don’t berate such a sacred holiday.
